Brazil’s Petrobras Beats 4 Records in 8 Days

Brazil’s oil giant Petrobras reached, this Wednesday, April 6, its fourth record oil production in the last eight days, totaling 1,720,096 barrels per day (bpd) in the whole country, according to information issued by its office in Rio de Janeiro.

Previous record production, reached last March 30th, was 1,650,947 barrels per day.


The company’s press department announced that the production of Platforms P-43 and P-48 contributed the most to breaking the record.


These platforms integrate the Barracuda-Caratinga Complex, located in Bacia de Campos, in the state of Rio de Janeiro.


Together, they are currently producing 150 thousand bpd. When they reach their full operational capacity, which may happen by July, they will double production to 300 thousand bpd.


On April 5, while talking in a public hearing before the Senate Economic Affairs Commission, the president of Petrobras, José Eduardo Dutra, said that Brazil may become self-sufficient in petroleum production next year. Dutra states that the company forecasts a 14.5% increase in production in 2005 in comparison with last year.


When asked about alterations in fuel prices, Dutra affirmed that he is accompanying the evolution of prices on the international market and awaiting a clearer definition on this matter.


He claimed that the price of petroleum in Brazil is competive and in line with the world market.


“Our policy is not based on transferring short-term volatility to consumers. There are times when our price is higher, there are times when it is lower, but over the course of the year our price adheres to the international market price,” he said.
