Brazil Petrobras’s New Record: 1.7 Million Barrels a Day

Petrobras – Brazilian Petroleum S.A. – broke its old daily production record of 1.596 million barrels, set in February, 2003, by turning out 1.704 million barrels per day in April.

According to Petrobras president José Eduardo Dutra, this year’s average should remain above the 1.7 million level, 14% more than last year’s daily average of 1.493 million barrels.

The production increase was made possible by the coming on line of platforms P-43, last December, and P-48, this February.

“These data confirm what is written in Petrobras’ strategic plan: Brazil will attain self-sufficiency in petroleum in 2006. And it is not a self-sufficiency that’s here today and gone tomorrow. Rather, it is one that is sustainable over the years,” Dutra affirmed.

According to the Petrobras president, the company intends to continue raising production. The forecast for 2006 is for an average of 1.92 million barrels per day. In 2010 the company hopes to reach the 2.3 million level.
