Food and Education Price Hikes Feed Inflation in Brazil

Brazilians started the year having to spend more money to feed themselves. A study released today by Brazil’s Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) indicates that the average price of agricultural products had a 1.60% increase, in the first 10 days of January, and caused a rise in inflation.

The products that presented highest price variation were manioc (12.73%), eggs (9.04%), soy (5.74%), and milk (1.60%). In the first ten days of December, food price variation dropped 0.22%.

Expenditures on education, reading, and recreation also had a strong contribution to inflation rise, registering price variation of 1.96% in the first ten days of the year.

Prices of personal care and hygiene products also went up, from a negative 1.30% in December, to 0.40% in January.
