Brazilians Create Spermatozoids and Ovules from Mouse Stem Cells

Two Brazilian scientists from the Roger Abdelmassih Clinic and Research Center on Human Reproduction, in São Paulo, southeast Brazil, presented an all-new research at the annual meeting at the European Society of Human Reproduction, in Prague, last month.

The scientists, Russian naturalized Brazilian, Irina Kerkis and Alexandre Kerkis, managed to create mature spermatozoids and ovules from embryonic stem cells of a mouse. The aim is to, one day, produce human ovules and spermatozoids from stem cells to help infertile couples.

The study was published in Nature, main scientific publication, last week.

"The quotation in Nature is a certificate that we are on the right track and the acknowledgement of the work of our collaborators," stated Dr. Roger Abdelmassih, Brazilian son of Lebanese who is a reference in the field of human reproduction around the world.
