Brazilian-Palestinian Confederation Gets New Name and Leaders

The Palestinian Arab Confederation of Brazil (Copal) is now called Federation of Brazilian Arab Palestinian Organizations (Fepal), and its new president is Elayyan Aladdin.

The changes were implemented during the 9th Congress of Palestinian Arab Organizations and Communities in Brazil, held in Porto Alegre, capital of the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, from Friday until yesterday, January 28, according to the secretary-general at Fepal, Emir Mourad.

During the congress, an election was held for the new board of directors of the organization, whose name was also changed. Aladdin was already the interim president at Copal.

The Palestinian ambassador in Brasília, Mayada Bamie, participated in the opening of the Congress. She delivered a message of support from the president of the Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, to the Congress.

Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, also sent a message to the Palestinians, according to Mourad. Also attending the meeting were government officials from the state of Rio Grande do Sul and the federal government.

During the congress, several activities were scheduled to involve Palestinian immigrants and descendents in Brazil in years to come.
