Brazil Consumers Happier with Present and Confident in Future

Brazilian store The confidence of Brazilian consumers in the economic situation of Brazil and Brazilian cities has increased, according to the Consumer Expectation Survey, disclosed May 27 by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation.

The Consumer Confidence Index, which measures two variables, rose 2% from April to May. In comparison with May last year, the expansion was 5.6%.

According to the survey, both the assessments of the current situation and the expectations for the coming months have become more favorable. From April to May, the Current Situation Index grew 2.6%, and the Expectancy Index rose 1.6%.

In the month of May, consumers' assessment of the economic situation in their cities has improved. The share of those who considered the situation as good went up from 15.5% to 19%. The rate of those who considered it bad grew by a lower rate, from 29.8% to 30.6%.

Expectation regarding the economic situation during the next six months is more optimistic as well: the share of consumers surveyed who expect improvement grew from 22% to 24.2%, and that of those who expect a worsening decreased from 14.4% to 11.3%.

The Consumer Expectation Survey is based on a sample of 2,000 households in seven of the main Brazilian capitals. Data were collected from May 2nd to 21st.
