Social Activism Makes Brazil’s Petrobras Member of UN Committee

Petrobras, the first and only Latin American company that is a member of the United Nation’s Global Pact Committee, participated yesterday, June 28, in New York, in the committee’s first meeting, presided by UN secretary-general, Kofi Annan.

The Brazilian state enterprise was represented by its president, José Sérgio Gabrielli. In a note, Petrobras says that it was chosen for "its initiatives committed to social responsibility, foremost among them activities to preserve the environment and respect for human rights and working conditions."

The Global Pact is composed of companies committed to nine principles referring to human rights, working conditions, and the environment.

The committee has 25 members and includes representatives of companies, business and workers’ associations, and other civil society organizations.

According to Petrobras, the company adhered voluntarily to the Global Pact in 2003, and its election as a member of the council is in recognition of its application of the committee’s principles in the various spheres in which it acts.

The company also informs that in 2005 it spent US$ 232 million on projects in the areas of social and environmental responsibility.
