Brazil Holds International Meeting on Food Security

The International Seminar on Food Security being held in Brazil is discussing nutritional education experiences and policies adopted in various countries. The meeting is sponsored by the National Food and Nutritional Security Council (Consea), in partnership with the Roberto Marinho Foundation.

According to Consea president, Chico Menezes, nutritional education policy is one of the areas in which there is room for Brazil to advance in the war against hunger.

“Mainly in the quest for food security, where the country will learn about various ways to practice healthful nutritional habits that can overcome the big problems we still face in this area,” Menezes said, in an interview for National Radio’s Brazil Magazine program.

For the Consea president, Brazil’s innovative approaches are interesting and should be presented to representatives from other countries.

“We searched for experiences already practiced here, and they will be discussed and demonstrated to the international specialists.”

He observes that children are the chief beneficiaries of the school meal program. “Despite scarce funds, it is possible to undertake very important initiatives. 37 million children in Brazil are cared for by the school meal plan.”

The Consea is also organizing the 1st National Gathering of Innovative School Meal Experiences, which begins on Thursday (16).

“The school meal issue is key, because it is the school that succeeds or fails in transmitting good nutritional habits to society as a whole,” Menezes affirms.

The International Seminar on Food Security is ending today. The event counts on the presence of over 200 federal government technical personnel, specialists from Brazil and abroad, and representatives of ten Brazilian states.
