Sugar and Citrus Exports Get Brazil’s Port of Santos New Record

The shipping of export products from the port of Santos, the largest in Latin America, broke another record in the month of April.

The cargo throughput at the port, which is in the southeastern Brazilian state of São Paulo, grew 7.64% over the result in the same month last year. This was the largest growth registered in this period of the year.


The port received a 10.76% greater volume of export products, while presenting a slight drop, 0,01%, in imported products.


In the first four months of the year, the movement was 4.30% greater than last year. This result includes an expansion of 5.90% in exports and 0.91% in imports.


Sugar still leads the list of export products. In comparison to April 2004, the volume shipped more than doubled in April this year, totalling 909,700 tons.


In April last year, the total was 417,000 tons. From January to April, the elevation was 49.76%, totalling almost 3.2 million tons. Sugar is the largest export product from Brazil to the Arab countries.


Another product that presented expressive shipping, citric fruit juices, registered a 77% increase in exports through the Port of Santos, when compared to last year. The accumulated result for this year presents a 47.86% increase, with 540,000 tons.


Soy in grain, despite being in the second place in the list in terms of volumes, shrank in comparison to last year. Shipping dropped 13.01% in April and 17.85% in the first four months, with 2.2 million tons.


With regards to products unloaded at the Port of Santos, the highlights were wheat and salt, whose imports grew 448.9% and 112.4%, respectively.


Since the beginning of the year, wheat imports totalled 440,000 tons, presenting a 33.2% high, and those of salt, 306,500 tons, up 33.78%.
