73% of Brazilians Oppose Sale of Weapons

As Brazil prepares for a national referendum on disarmament next month, the National Transportation Confederation (CNT) has run a poll asking the same question that will appear on the October 23 ballot:

"The sale of firearms and ammunition should be prohibited in Brazil?" The answer was: 72.7% said yes; 24% said no; and 3.3% said they had no opinion or did not respond.

However, the survey found that opinion was divided with regard to the effect disarmament would have on violence. Of those interviewed, 50.6% said a halt in the sale of firearms and ammunition would reduce violence; 44.8% said it would not reduce violence; 4.6% did not respond or did not have an opinion.

The CNT survey was conducted by the Sensus opinion poll organization and interviewed 2,000 people in 195 municipalities between September 6 and 8.
