Kirchner: Brazil and Argentina Must Care More for Uruguay and Paraguay

In the opinion of Argentinean President, Nestor Kirchner, the Mercosur has to consider the difficulties faced by the bloc’s poorest members.

"Critical positions regarding the Mercosur are gaining strength in Paraguay and Uruguay in consequence of what is perceived as a lack of attention to these asymmetries," observed Kirchner, who met today in Brazilian capital Brasília with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

According to Kirchner, what is needed is a "joint endeavor to meet the demands" of Paraguay and Uruguay, as well as maintaining "an attitude of solidarity capable of dealing with specific situations and moving in the direction of a more profound treatment of the asymmetries."

Lula emphasized that the relationship between Brazil and Argentina is the "touchstone" for the strengthening of the Mercosur and the South American Community of Nations.

"We are aware of our responsibilities when it comes to regional integration. We want our partners in the bloc to be actively engaged in these projects," he underscored.

According to the Brazilian President, possibilities for the formation of consortia among the members of the bloc, such as in the area of shipbuilding, are being examined.

"We want this productive integration to occur just as much in armaments, aeronautics, and the conquest of space, among others. Argentina and Brazil have a commitment to the consolidation of an area of peace and prosperity in South America," Lula said.
