Brazil Opens South America’s Largest Thermoelectric Plant

Petrobras inaugurated, Wednesday, May 31, the Governor Leonel Brizola thermoelectric plant, powered by natural gas and functioning in a combined cogeneration cycle, which is more energy-efficient. The project cost US$ 715 million and created around two thousand direct jobs.

The unit, which is the largest in South America, is located in the city of Duque de Caxias, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is next to the Duque de Caxias refinery (REDUC).

The plant, which is capable of producing up to 400 tons of steam hourly and has an installed potential of 1036 megawatts (around 22% of Rio de Janeiro’s total energy consumption), generates enough energy to supply a city with 4.5 million residents. The steam will also be used to supply the REDUC.

A 13.7 kilometer-long power line interlinking the plant with the São José substation, which belongs to the Furnas Central Electric company, will integrate the unit with the Interlinked National System (SIN).
