Brazil Says It’s Ready to Be a UN Security Council Member

Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Relations stated that the G-4 Group – Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan – is willing to work together with all other Member States of the United Nations (UN), over the next weeks, to promote the comprehensive reform announced in a report of the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

According to the Ministry’s announcement, the four countries expect that “with the support of the great majority of the Member States, it will be possible to adopt a resolution about the Security Council reform until mid-year. After a decade of debates, the UN needs to make this reform happen.”

Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan, adds the Ministry’s note, declare they are “ready for the rights and duties inherent to the condition of being a permanent member of the Security Council.”

The UN Secretary-General report, entitled “In larger freedom: towards development, security and human rights for all,” proposes revitalization of the United Nations Organization and of the multilateral system based on three common and interrelated objectives: development, security and human rights for all.

The reforms, according to the Ministry, must be approved before the First High-Level Plenary Meeting for the Quinquennial Review of the Millennium Declaration, expected for September 14-16, in New York (USA).

The Ministry adds, however, that the decision about the Security Council must be made before the meeting, as proposed by Kofi Annan, to decisively impel the reform comprehensive process.
