Brazil Wants Free Trade Agreement with Japan and South Korea

More than 400 entrepreneurs will accompany Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his official trip to South Korea and Japan. 190 entrepreneurs confirmed they will go to South Korea, and 242, to Japan. President Lula will depart on May 24.

According to the Director of the Department of Trade Promotion of the Ministry of Foreign Relations, Ambassador Mário Vilalva, six business contracts will probably be signed during the visit. They total approximately US$ 1.5 billion in private businesses between the two countries, in the areas of energy, construction, and infrastructure.

A meeting between representatives of the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry (CNI) and Keidanrem, the Japanese entrepreneurial association, is also scheduled.

Lula will have breakfast, both in South Korea and in Japan, with presidents of approximately 15 large companies.

“It will be a moment in which President Lula and the ministers will be able to talk about the current status of the Brazilian economy, incentives for foreign investments in Brazil, and new investments rules, such as the Public-Private Partnership (PPP),” explains Vilalva.

The objective of the trip is to increment commercial relations between the two countries. According to Vilalva, Brazilian entrepreneurs will discuss new ways of doing business, such as the possibility of establishing a free trade area between the countries.

Vilalva said that this entrepreneurial understanding will be important to confer more legitimacy to future political agreements.
